Funery Hatchment

Code: 12755

W: 102cm (40.2")H: 102cm (40.2")D: 2cm (0.8")

A European funery hatchment.
A superbly decorative piece which rarely comes to market with a magnificent family crest or coat of arms hand painted on thin, ebonized framed board.
Funery hatchments were hung over the door of the deceased's house and later on the wall of the church where he was buried. The word "OBIIT" is Latin for "deceased" and the date of death is detailed below. They were often reused for differnt members of the same family with the example last having been in use in 1983 (the earlier dates are visible below this on closer examination).
Probably Belgian, 20th century (probably forst used in the 50's or 60's)
Wear commensurate with age, excellent overall. Measurements are taken from corner to corner.
UK courier service available, please enquire for details.
