Military Field Treatment Trunk #1

SOLD

Code: 11996

Dimensions:

W: 77cm (30.3")H: 40cm (15.7")D: 38cm (15")

A rare surviving example of a wicker military field treatment trunk.
An interesting & attractive piece, the canvas covered, woven wicker hamper with iron banding, rope-work handles & heavy brown leather binding with the front & end panels in the original painted finish. The inside of the trunk retains all three original tins with hinged lids & the inner lid bears a maker's mark for Scott & Sons of London along with the military issue broad arrow.
Manufactured between the two wars, these trunks or panniers were carried in the field & versions included a dental kit, gas treatment outfit & also a surgical version. They were repurposed after use & the front panel would be painted over & then labelled once used again.
This example comes in completely untouched & fresh to the market condition, even retaining its original paper label for UCAL Chemists, probably added after being refilled with supplies.
Early 20th century.
Wear commensurate with age, good solid condition, completely untouched original condition. One hole inside the base of the inner part as detailed in the images, leather a little stiff but all there, the odd lone woodworm hole treated as a precaution, otherwise exceptionally original, just a little dusty inside!
