A wonderful & rare Lampe Gras 205 by Bernard Albin-Gras.
An exceptionally original, early & unmolested example of this iconic piece of lighting. The cast iron pyramid base supports an articulated steel arm on a large adjustable ball joint & the lamp retains its original spun aluminium shade. The whole lamp has a patina to die for & the base has an original gilt Parisian suppliers transfer to the rear.
In 1922 Bernard-Albin Gras designed a series of lamps for use in offices and in industrial environments. The Lampe Gras was astounding in its simple yet robust and ergonomic design & amazingly, there is not a single screw or welded joint used in the manufacture of the entire lamp. In 1927 the Ravel company purchased the patent and started production of the lamps which very quickly found their way into the home as well as the workplace.
A timeless piece of lighting & a study in the form-follows-function school of design.
Rewired in twisted black flex
Wear commensurate with age, cosmetically unrestored, displays beautifully. No notable damage, all parts original, light chipping to the top of the ball joint as is the norm.
