An early surgical floor lamp by Down Bros.
An unusual & highly original example of excellent form & quality, the heavy, solid cast iron base supporting a bronze upright on which the height-adjustable articulated lamp head can be precisely positioned with a view to illuminating delicate surgical procedures. The lamp head has a thick, magnifying bullseye glass lens one side & a flat opaque glone on the other which features a kalidescope style lens with which to adjust the light.
I love everything about this scarce lamp but one thing that really stands out is the natural verdigris colour, it is absolutely sublime.
Rewired in twisted black flex
English, c1920
Wear commensurate with age, totally untouched yest extremely good overall showing the usual signs of age. The lamp takes regular bayonet cap bulbs & the top section is simply pulled out for access (a cool running LED variety is recommended given the lamp head is solid brass & enclosed). This lamp is comparitively extremely heavy!
