A huge 19th century pharmacy cabinet.
A wonderful & unique example of great scale, the bank of drawers, lockers & shelves sitting below eight bays of glazed cupboards & shelves finished with a large cornice. The vast bank of drawers are finished with decorative glass handles and the upper section is finished with the most beautiful arches to both the cabinets & shelving sections. The cabinet doors all retain their original 'wavy' floated glass and height adjustable shelves with the lower locker & cupboard handles in solid brass.
Hayes Chemist was established in the 1870's in Kings Lynn, Norfolk & ran by the Hayes family who owned several businesses in Kings Lynn from the mid 19th century through to the 1950's. They had chemists on Norfolk Street in the town centre & another in Gaywood which is where this unit was originally fitted. The chemists were both sold in the 1950's & this unit was reclaimed by one of the younger relatives for general storage use. We purchased it from that property last year & unbelievably it had travelled less than 10 miles since it was originally fitted.
A truly wonderful cabinet with great history, one of the the very best things I've found to date, the likes of which are becoming exceedingly difficult to find.
1870's
Wear commensurate with age, good overall showing numerous signs of its past with a few old repairs & additions and plenty of wear and tear & character (detailed condition report & additional images available on request). The grey ply back to the upper section & lower right hand shelving unit is a contemporary addition & the bank of drawers, lower lockers have never had a back or base, the wall & floor did this job once the unit was installed.
Please note: We have edited the first five images to show the potential of the piece in situ but have left the remaining ones untouched in the warehouse setting for accuracy. If you think it may be of interest & are able to come to view it in person, please do as the images do this no justice whatsoever. Given its size, it was so awkward to photograph that the scale, colour & character all feel somewhat lost in the resulting photographs.
Splits into three sections for transport & installation although the top is one piece. We have put this together for display in our warehouse though the unit was originally part of a fitted shop interior as opposed to a stand-alone unit. It will therefor require a profesional installation in its new home which may include alterations etc. Both the top and lower sections will need to be secured to the wall at the top for safety.
This unit is huge & will require specialist collection and delivery.
