A huge illuminated advertising clock by Gensign.
A remarkable & extremely rare clock of great proportions, double sided with the most fantastic square faces flanked by advertising panels top & bottom, all illuminated from within by four bulbs. The faces & advertising panels are reverse painted glass, the clock retains it's original hands & twin hanging brackets & the original paintwork has a great untouched patina. These iconic Gensign clocks were made to order in small numbers, few survived & they rarely come onto the market at all.
The clock hung for the better part of a century outside 'Streets Ironmongery' in Havent, midaway between Portsmouth & Chichester & was reclaimed when they finally closed in 2017. In the second & third from last images the clock can be seen in the distance in the 1940's black & white image & then again shortly before it was taken down.
Early 20th century.
Wear commensurate with age, good solid condition overall. The clock has obviously had a life during it's prolonged service though remains solid with a couple of spots of (stable, see last image) corrosion as highlighted. It it has one faithfully reproduced replacement glass face & one replacement side & bottom panel. The original movements have been replaced with modern quartz types (battery) but the originals were supplied to us with the clock & can be included at no extra cost, the modern movements do keep good time once set.
