A wonderful & extremely rare enamel advertising sign for The Patent Enamel Company.
A wonderful & extremely early enamel sign, harking back to the early days of enamel advertising signs or 'tablets' as they were known as then. Featuring some fantastic shadowed typography on a royal blue background with an ornate blue border in the thickest enamel I've seen to date.
Benjamin Baugh developed the process of making enameled iron plate signs for advertising, he patented this process in 1859 & 'Salts Patent Enamel Works' of Birmingham was born. In the late 1880's, they became 'The Patent Enamel Co Ltd' & went on to become the leading manufacturer of enamel advertising signs in the world.
An extremely rare item & a beautiful piece of history.
Likely 1880's, possibly even earlier.
Wear commensurate with age, good overall with no restoration, all mounting holes intact but a fair amount of surface wear.
