An early antique iron lark spit.
A wonderfully sculptural & very early example featuring some beautiful iron-work & a fantastic amount of wear.
Lark spits were used to roast small birds in front of an open fire, the bird was held in place with the spikes & the simple sprung mechanism allowed it to be raised & lowered to cook the meat evenly.
A wonderful piece of history.
French, likely 18th Century, possibly earlier.
Wear commensurate with age, fair condition overall, a good honest example, spikes worn & twisted over time.
