An antique Cambridge University presentation rudder trophy.
A wonderfully detailed & very decorative presentation rudder adorned with original inscription & college insignia with the most fantastic craquelure finish.
A fantastic piece of history & not something which turns up very often, particularly of this age.
Any rowing crew which recorded four consecutive 'bumps' were said to have earned their oars & were awarded a presentation oar, the coach received a shield & the cox received a rudder such as this.
The inscription reads:
University Fours Nov 1907
Christ's Pembroke 3rd Trinity
Bow, G E Fairbairn 1.9
2 H M Goldsmith 12.5
3 N E Hawdon 12.7
Stroke F H Jerwood 11.11
Wear commensurate with age, good solid condition, expected wear to the finish in places, small strip of wood absent from the rear of the rudder & a few age related cracks. Would probably wax polish up well but we've left it as found.
