A fantastic vintage pawnbrokers trade sign of epic proportions. An amazing reclaimed architectural element, the iconic trio of huge golden spheres suspended from the steel bracket, all in original black & gold paint. With each sphere around a foot in diameter, the sign makes a wonderful, striking & impressive display piece.
Mid 20th Century.
Legend has it that the pawnbrokers 'balls' were originally three flat golden coins laid haradically apon a sable field but were later converted to spheres to attract attention. The symbol has also been attributed to St Nicholas, the patron saint of pawnbrokers, who was said to have given a poor mans three daughters each a bag of gold so that they could get married.
Wear commensurate with age with some expected wear to the paintwork but structurally sound. The sign can be mounted either way up & comes unrestored.
