A huge oil on canvas funery hatchment.
A beautiful & rare piece, the hand painted oil on canvas in it's original, ebonised pine frame with a gilt slip. The artwork is excellent, particularly to the red ribbon surrounding the family crest to the centre & the workmanship in the frame is very impressive, right down to the blacksmith-made iron hanger to the rear.
Funery hatchments were hung over the door of a deceased's persons house (always someone of importance to the church) and then later kept on the wall of the church where they were buried. The word "OBIIT" is Latin for "deceased" and the date of death is detailed within the hatchment, in this case, the 29th May 1871.
A unique & very decorative statement piece of great scale.
19th century
Wear commensurate with age, totally untouched.
