A large antique taxidermy Hartebeest mount by Peter Spicer & Sons.
A stunning mount by one of the most talented taxidermist of all time, the imposing Hartebeest horns on a gently sun-bleached oak sheild, the shape of which being trademark Peter Spicer, stamped with his makers mark to the rear.
Peter Spicer started trading in animal skins & the like around 1860 in Leamington Spa and by 1860 was, along with Rowland Ward of Picadilly, being lauded as one of the best taxidermists in the country & almost certainly, the world. Remarkably, despite his frequent contact with Arsenic & other hazardous chemicals used in his work, Spicer survived until the age of 96! Best known for his English fox head mouts, these African horn mounts are a little more unusual with both mounts listed having been formerly kept on a large estate on the Scottish borders.
Late 19th / early 20th century.
Wear commensurate with age, very good overall.
