A fantastic antique chemists advertising sign for Dr Collis Brownes Chlorodyne. This beautiful early advertising sign would have adorned a chemists window in its day & is an extremely rare survivor. The sign is beautifully constructed on a sheet of clear glass, reverse painted in a gold finish & overlayed with very thin cut ruby-glass lettering. The workmanship is superb, the contrasting colours are just perfect & the overall look is simply spot on. A truly wonderful sign.
To fully appreciate this piece, one must first understand what exactly 'Chlorodyne' was. Invented in the late 19th Century by Dr Chollis Browne, it was a preparation containing opium, cannabis & chloroform. Needless to say, despite having very few healing properties, it generally made the user feel better in no time! The downside was that it caused widespread addiction & overdoses with many a corpse found in a room littered with empty Chlorodyne bottles. It was eventually discontinued however the Chollis Brone brand lives on in the form of a modern cough mixture.
Early 20th century.
Wear commensurate with age, unrestored but in very good condition with some old adhesive on the rear. No cracks or damage.
