SOLD
An early antique cock fighting stand.
A beautiful, very unusual & extremely scarce surviving piece of folk art of excellent form, with interesting if slightly macabre provenance.
In mixed hardwood, the hand-turned perch is supported by three legs above a t-bar stretcher with pegged joints.  The timber has the most amazing depth of colour & beautiful amount of wear.
The stand would have served as a resting place for the fighting cock before a fight & possibly also as a stool for the owner during the fight if required. A short length of cord attached to the birds leg & then to the end of the perch would prevent any unexpected, early brawls.
From a private collection in Norfolk, a super rare survivor with the most wonderful primitive look about it.
Mid 19th century
Wear commensurate with age, unrestored showing numerous pleasing signs of age, solid with a few old chips etc & a couple of later nails here & there, very good overall.
